Laura is a co-founder of ActiveDance and is a qualified and experienced dance teacher who has been dancing and teaching for over 15 years.

Laura is qualified to teach Cheerleading, Disco, Freestyle and Street Dance to children and adults of all abilities and her classes are always extremely popular. Laura ensures that all our pupils’ talents are showcased by organising regular presentation evenings and shows as well as organising and choreographing the exciting charity performances we hold throughout the year!

Laura first passion is teaching and she still enjoys teaching some classes and overseeing the Hip Hop Competitive Department however Laura’s main roles within the dance school have changed with our rapid expansion and it is now Laura’s job as Creative Director to manage all creative aspects of ActiveDance through events, exams, dance competitions, creative marketing, various dance styles and up to date choreography to ensure we are market leader in our area.

Laura is forever expanding her knowledge of dance and fitness though teaching and study and has recently completed an Exercise to Music Course to enhance her understanding of fitness related dance for children.

Nicola is a co-founder of ActiveDance and comes from a child psychology background where she focused her studies on the importance of physical activity to children’s development.  As a result she recognised the positive effects sports such as dance can have on children and together with the professional influences of Laura developed a dance and exercise plan to stimulate children’s bodies and minds.

Nicola qualified as a dance teacher in 2009 and managed the Infant and Junior classes at ActiveDance with her classes always being extremely popular.  Although Nicola no longer physically teaches classes due to other responsibilities she still maintains a great relationship with all the parents and pupils.  Nicola’s role within ActiveDance is now Operations Director which means she is responsible for the smooth running of the dance schools, developing growth strategies, marketing, brand planning and business-development strategies

Nicola is also responsible for the successful partnerships between ActiveDance and other businesses and oversees the external school work and teachers timetables.

Emma started dancing at the age of 3 years old doing Latin, Ballroom, Freestyle and Rock n Roll. As a freestyle competitor Emma reached starter level aged 7 years old and won ‘Starter of the Year’ at only 8 years old!  She then quickly progressed into intermediates and was a championship dancer by the age of 14. In 2004 Emma won Solo Nationwide Medallist of the Year for 14-17 year olds out of 85 competitors!  And also took the 1st place title in the pairs section at the same competition.  After receiving an A in GCSE Dance Emma went onto study at Pendleton College and received a triple distinction in BTEC Dance and from there auditioned and gained a place at John Moores University where she trained and studied for 3 years.

Emma has performed in many music videos, as a dancer at Tiger Tiger and danced at the Village Hotels as part of 70s Nights or Dance through the Decades evenings.

Emma works full time for ActiveDance heading our ever expanding Freestyle Competitive Department and choreographing all the freestyle exam grades as well as teaching a variety of classes at the studios and in within the local primary schools.  Emma is a fantastic dancer as well as a knowledgeable teacher and a great asset to ActiveDance.

Katie Johnson – Senior Instructor

Katie danced as a pupil from being 2 years old up until 16 and has performed in over 20 show productions and taken many examinations in Ballet, Tap and Modern. At the age of 16 Katie went on to train at Preston Dance College and later onto North Liverpool Academy of Dance to gain her ISTD teaching qualifications.
Katie has been with ActiveDance since 2010 teaching Ballet, Tap, Modern, Street Dance, Freestyle, Cheerleading, Lyrical & Street in Heels. Katie has a passion for all styles of dance but as head of the Ballet & Tap Department she spends most of her time teaching ballet and tap and choreographing ballet and tap routines for the shows and Exams.
Katie also represented The Lowry for 2012-2013 as a Dance Ambassador & Regional Coordinator and recently completed an Exercise to Music Qualification.

Katie is a full time member of staff at ActiveDance teaching a variety of classes at the studios and in within the local primary schools. Katie is an incredible dancer as well as a informed teacher and a great asset to ActiveDance! Katie even says “I love my job it is very rewarding and I wouldn’t change it for the world”

Mel Hooley – Head of Street & Freestyle

Mel is one of our newest teachers who joined the team in July 2016. After dancing competitively since she was 7 and assisting classes for 7 years  at other dance schools she has quickly adapted to our ‘ActiveDance ways’ and has been really popular with our pupils, parents and staff.
Mel is currently on a performing arts course at Bury College University and undergoing training to take her teaching exam in the near future.


Megan Healey – Day time co-ordinator & Irish dancing teacher

Megan is our fantastic new daytime co-ordinator teaching a range of pre-school classes and adult fitness classes. As the owner of an Irish dancing school in Prestwich she has also brought a new style to our dance school and teaches daytime and evening Irish dancing classes at the studios. Megan began dancing at the age of 7 for the Lally School in Manchester. She qualified for the World Championships every single year from the youngest age possible up to aged 20, her highest ranking being 11th in the world in 2011.
She won numerous championships including the NorthWest Regionals 4 times and was European champion in 2006.
Megan qualified as a TCRG in Irish dancing at the age of 20 and taught for 3 years with the Lally School. She then branched out on my own opening the Healey School of Irish Dancing in April 2015. Finally she was part of the professional show called Titanic dance in Derry.

Nadie Purslow – Senior Instructor

Nadine started dancing as a pupil in 1977 and soon went on to become a student teacher. She earned her first teaching qualification in March 1990 with the UKA in Ballroom and went on to obtain further qualifications in Rock n Roll and Licentiate Freestyle, Classical and Latin.

Nadine started her own classes in September 1990, beginning with one night a week at St Andrew’s School Hall however her classes soon grew in popularity and on the 2nd of March 1992 Nadine opened Spirals Dance Centre.

Nadine says the best part of being a dance teacher is “seeing children grow in confidence and also seeing nervous adults having the confidence to go out dancing socially away from the school”

Nadine has a vast experience of running successful dance classes and is head of our Ballroom and Latin Department with Karen and Jess working alongside her.


Karen Mosley – Ballroom and Latin teacher

Karen began as a freestyle pupil with Nadine (partners with Laura Moore) and then began helping Nadine with the Ballroom and Latin classes. She has now become a crucial member of the Ballroom and Latin department. Karen took her Associate Ballroom exam in May and passed with flying colours!!

Helen is an extremely experienced gymnastics coach and has been offering classes at ActiveDance since 2012. Helen has competed all over the world including the USA and Europe and competed in the Women’s British Championships. Helen is the former joint Head Coach of Bury Gymnastics and was also part of the team that transformed the club into the thriving club that it is today.

Helen teaches low level gymnastics within our studios but still has strong links to Bury Gymnastics Club for talented children.




Lucy McGrath – Gymnastics teacher

As our gymnastics department expanded as we brought in new weekend classes we also took on another brilliant gymnastics teacher  Lucy McGath!
Lucy teaches our pre-school and infant classes at both studios on Saturdays and also helped examine at our first ever gymnastics exams in December 2016. Lucy has fantastic experience teaching children right up to squad level and has been an absolute asset to our gymnastics department.


Grace – Freestyle teacher

Grace is another one of our teachers who used to compete in Freestyle  and now assists Emma in the competitive freestyle department at comps and also working one-to-one with the dancers to perfect their competitive routines.
Grace is currently at university on a dance, performance and teaching course which we think will massively benefit her in her teaching role here at ActiveDance!

Amanda Oxtoby – Receptionist

Amanda was already the receptionist at Footsteps before ActiveDance took over and has now become a brilliant member of our team working reception at the Bolton studios Tuesdays and Thursdays. Amanda has a brilliant rapport with the parents and is also very popular with our pupils and staff. Her organisation and efficiency makes her a brilliant receptionist and an asset to our team.

Jade Gaskell – Receptionist

Jade is another one of ActiveDance’s first pupils who we then welcomed into our team! Jade completed a business admin apprenticeship with us in 2013/14 before going onto study nursing full time. We now welcome her back as our weekend receptionists at ActiveDance Bolton.


Sam Collard- Street Teacher

Sam was already teaching street, contemporary, ballet and tap at Footsteps studios before ActiveDance took over to create ActiveDance Bolton and has now become a brilliant member of out team. Sam works most evenings along side a performing arts course at Bury College University, and has also entered the street competitive department teaching our boys team Dukes and also dancing himself in Assix.

Sam has fit into the ActiveDance team so well after the merge and all our pupils love him!!


Rob Fenton – Head of Drama

Rob is our drama teacher and offers classes and workshops for children of all ages. He is also co-running our winter pantomimes with Sam.

Rob is going to be working closely with us to rapidly expand our drama department so watch this space!!


Katie Walsh – Street & Freestyle teacher

Katie came competitive freestyle background and she has become a great asset to our street and freestyle department. As well as studio work at ActiveDance she also teaches street dance and QFit sessions in many schools in Bury.

Katie took her associate exam in June 2015 and is now qualified and teaching classes on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays


Karen Lauder – Ballet & Tap teacher

Modern Jazz (IDTA)

Karen began dancing when she was 5 years-old and was classically trained in ballet for 11 years. She secured a place at the London Studio Centre with a scholarship and furthered her training in Ballet, Contemporary, Tap, Jazz, Musical Theatre and Street Jazz. On completion she was awarded her dance diploma.  Karen has had a long and successful dance career. She was a soloist at the world famous Moulin Rouge in Paris.  She has also been selected for many tours with the Moulin Rouge performing the Cancan at various events and TV appearances, including the Rio Carnival in 2008. Karen has also travelled around the globe as a dance professional on board many international cruise ships performing various Musicals including Cats, Fame and Producers plus many more.  Karen retired from the stage in 2013, and then gained teaching qualifications from the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) in Modern Jazz. Karen is currently working towards her DDI teaching qualifications and UKA Associate in Ballet & Tap. She is also looking forward to passing on her knowledge, expertise and stage experience to students at ActiveDance.
